Partner with Wayne State University Grad Students!

Hello! I'm teaching Job Analysis at Wayne State University this fall, and a major component of the class is an applied consulting project. I am looking for three organizations who would like some free job analysis consulting from 2nd year grad students!

My preference would be to partner with a mix of organizations, including for-profit and non-profit organization of different sizes. The consulting project will likely need to be completed virtually (the safety of the students is a top priority). It is my preference to work with companies in the southeast Michigan area. As a rough rule of thumb, organizations should have a minimum of 100 employees. However, I'm ultimately looking for the best learning opportunity for the students and am open to talking with any organization.

Each organization would have a team of approximately five or six students working on their project. The project will be completed roughly between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

Why might an organization need a job analysis? Job analysis is the systematic research of work, and uncovers the critical tasks of a job and what skills or other characteristics a person needs in order to do the job. Job analysis is the foundation of all HR practices.

Last year, the students completed three projects in separate teams, including:

  • Updated performance management criteria for a non-profit organization in downtown Detroit,

  • Creation of job descriptions for two newly-created roles at a major automotive supply company, and

  • Job leveling of machinist roles at a medical equipment manufacturer to develop consistent training, compensation, and job duties at various locations after a series of acquisitions.

Two years ago, the students performed a job analysis of the first-line supervisor role at manufacturing company. The data from the job analysis was used in the design of a leadership development program. Job analysis data can also be used for designing compensation, selection, and performance management systems.

This is a great opportunity for organizations that are looking for talent to “try before they buy.” These students are capable, professional 2nd year graduate students who will be graduating in 2021 with Masters degrees in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and many will be looking for employment opportunities in the field.

If you are involved with or know of an organization that might be a good fit, please let me know! I love introductions. Shoot me a note at jessica@towerandco.com.
